We returned last Friday to the village of Kimenyulo for the graduation of our six trainees and the commissioning of the new buildings. We were pleased to see that final week’s work meant that the finishing touches had been put in place on all the buildings and that the whole site had been tidied ready for the ceremony.

Local MP Asuman Kiyingi opens the 3 Classroom Block |

We weren’t sure what to expect but were thrilled of how the day panned out. There were a variety of guests invited including the “chief guest”, Hon. Asuman Kiyingi, the local Member of Parliament. There were many speeches, most of them thanking HYT for their effort over the last year. Many praised too the hard work of the trainees and of their teachers, Sam and Musa.
The HYT team was proud to be able to say that not one tree was cut down to build the school thanks to our compressed earth block technology. The new kitchen passed its first major test and was able to provide a plate of food for all present. The meal was a traditional dish of matoke (cooked bananas), rice and meat.
The trainees achieved a huge amount during their 12 months of work as a result of their great endeavour and dedication. They all graduated receiving certificates from our country manager, Marcus. The atmosphere was incredible; there were children dancing everywhere, impatient to begin to use the new school. Just before we left Marcus, Philip, Johnny, Sam and Musa received gifts of appreciation. The latter 4 were presented with a live chicken! This for us was one of the highlights of the day, together with the graduation of the trainees and the opening of the new buildings.
We will be sorry not to see the team at Kimenyulo every week but we will be sure to return often to check on how they are getting on. The school management have committed themselves to maintain the new facilities and the chief guest promised to work to help the school repair the library which was a welcome surprise at the end of his speech.
HYT now moves to focus its work on St Peter's school, 1V7 as well as other projects in western Kamuli District.
