Experincing the Atmosphere of an HYT Training Site

-->
As HYT's latest volunteers, we were very excited about our first trip to the village and it was an adventure we can assure you! We weren’t sure what to expect but it turned out that what was waiting for us were incredibly nice people and the now familiar sight of HYT buildings. We were at Kimeyulo Primary School which is 1 Village number 6, where the trainees have built two water tanks, one block of latrines, a kitchen and a new three classroom block as well as refurbishing an old four classroom block.

When we arrived at the village we were glad to see that we could be of help immediately. It was great to sense the enthusiasm of both the trainees as well as Sam and Musa, the head trainers. The relationship between Sam, Musa and the trainees was astonishing - It was more like the whole crew being friends and just getting on with it together rather than being a dictatorial working environment. It was also delightful to acknowledge that the Chairman of the school helped in the refurbishment of the old classroom block, showing full support for the project.

On Wednesday, together with some of the trainees, we were tasked with the repainting of one of the classrooms in the “old” building, which is going to be fully refurbished in the next few weeks. The work was fun and even more so given that it was not done in the sun, with our sunburn from Tuesday still an ever-present reminder of how hot it can get here! We finished one whole classroom on Wednesday and were impressed by how enjoyable the work was.

We felt the positive atmosphere was really the key to HYT's work at 1V6 - through it the work felt much easier, was more fun and was done far quicker. We were also thrilled to see how motivated the trainees were, with them finishing work not when it was 5pm, but when the goals for the day were reached. To put into two words an ‘outstanding atmosphere’ was present at 1V6 and we look forward to our next visit, which will  probably be St Peter's school, 1V7, as 1V6 should be complete in about two weeks time.
