Block making in front of the only surviving original building |
I am back in Uganda for the first time in nearly three and a half years and have today been to visit a school I first saw last time I was here. Mutai Secondary School is in Jinja District about 15 miles north of the office and was a very poor school with only two main buildings.

One of these buildings has now been refurbished and one has been demolished and replaced with a block of four classrooms that includes an office for the headteacher, Emma. However this is far from all that has been done at Mutai in the past three years.
In total, HYT has now carried out three phases of development at the school for the Jinja Educational Trust. We have now built two laboratories, six classrooms in two blocks, two 20,000L water tanks, an exam hall, a kitchen and latrines for both girls and boys with an additional washroom for the girls.

The school is a completely changed place as you can see from the before and after photographs. There are now 300 pupils and the headmaster, Emma who has been very supportive throughout the projects, expects this to rise to 500 in the near future, possibly even in this next academic year. The school is in the process of introducing vocational subjects including construction, tailoring and agriculture. HYT will be building an open fronted workshop to house the construction department later this year.

I am looking forward to the rest of my three weeks here in Uganda, it's great to be back.
