Our work at Mumma Jane's Kitchen in Jinja town was completed this week. The project, led by Johnny, saw 6 of our 1village trained masons put their skills to work to help a local school. The project was not an easy one with the site squeezed into a small courtyard but the guys pulled through and the final product is one of the smartest buildings HYT has ever built.

The previous kitchen was so smoky that it was impossible to walk in with your eyes open but the new kitchen has large windows on two sides that will bring in more light and help with the ventilation so this is no longer a problem. There is also a 30ft long chimney to take fumes well away from the children and up into the air.
The building also houses two store rooms, to enable to school to keep food and fuel separately from each other. The food store is rat proof so that the cook can be sure all food fed to the children is safe for consumption.
The kitchen was funded by the Jinja Educational Trust who support the work of Mumma Jane's through infrastructure developments and the provision of materials for teaching.
This was the first project that has seen the installation of a new style of fuel efficient stove. Built with refractory bricks and clay and reinforced with a steel frame, it is hoped that this new design will mean that our stoves are able to serve their users for many a year. We are just about to put one of these stoves in to another JET school, St Patricks on the other side of the river Nile.
