We have recently been asked by the Jinja
Educational Trust, to help improve the cooking facilities at Mama Jane's
Primary school and orphanage. Mama Jane's is located in the center of Jinja,
and provides both housing and education for the children in this area. Their
previous kitchen was dark and smoky which made it extremely difficult and
unpleasant to cater for 150 pupils and staff.

| The original kitchen |
Work started two weeks ago with the
demolition of the existing structure and the construction of new foundations as
it was found that the old kitchen didn’t have any! In the last few days the new
structure has been started using ISSBs made off-site at another JET site that
we have worked at - Mutai SS. Using ISSB means that the brickwork for the
kitchen will be completed in a little under two weeks.

To complete the new kitchen we will construct
a fuel-efficient stove which, it is hoped, will reduce the requirement for
firewood and shorten cooking time. In previous projects these stoves have
reduced the money spent on firewood to such an extent that the school have been
able to lower fees – we will be closely monitoring the effect that it has here.
