Yesterday, our volunteers Florence and Charlie visited
Makoka Primary School, the site of our fourth One Village at a Time project.
Their task was to attempt to evaluate HYT’s work and the effect it has had on
the school since we left there some 14 months ago. Using this information, HYT
can see which aspects of the project were successful and how best to improve on
future sites.

Staff Accommodation at Makoka
The volunteers asked the staff and older pupils a variety of
questions on topics such as the kitchen, classroom blocks and latrines.
Additionally, they also sat in on some lessons to see how the shape and size of
the classrooms suited the school’s current needs.

Flo and Charlie in discussion with Madame Makoka |
We are pleased to report that, overall, Florence and Charlie
found highly positive feedback from the day. For example, the renovation of the
school kitchen has resulted in meals being up to thirty minutes quicker to
prepare. Additionally, lessons are now starting two hours earlier due to new
onsite teacher accommodation. It is
pleasing to see that HYT’s buildings are still in good shape and also to hear
that graduates from the project have been recently employed to work on other
buildings in the school. Nonetheless, the day also highlighted some possible
improvements that HYT can take into account when working on projects in the
future. Overall, a successful day for the girls!
