Another week in Uganda: Our trip to St Andrews, Naminage

After spending a few weeks working at the HYT office in Jinja, our second trip to the village was long overdue. This time, we were to help out at St Andrews School, Naminage located in he Kamuli District which is in it's final stages of completion.

When we arrived, we were quickly whisked off by one of the teachers on a whistle stop tour of the weekly market at the trading centre down the road. The tour was mainly focused on food- with us trying out all the popular Ugandan delicacies, such as sugar cane, ground nuts, grilled maize, and our personal favourite- Chapattis!

With our newly acquired painting skills from our previous trip to Kimenyulo, we were asked to paint the new girls dormitory. This building is a considerable improvement from what the girls are currently using. The new building not only has double the amount of space for beds, but it also includes a shower room and study room for the girls.

The headmaster, Sam would often come and visit the building to check out how the work was progressing, often ladled with Africa tea and never failing to thank us and HYT for the improvements that it has made to his school. Sam seemed incredibly driven to spread the word about ISSB and his enthusiasm for this technology is very apparent.

That evening, Sam took us on a tour around Kamuli town. We first stopped off at his stationary shop, where we met his son Solomon and daughter Michelle. After the drive, he took us out for a dinner of roasted pork and cabbage with his family, despite us still being dressed in our dusty, paint ridden work clothes!

This trip highlighted to us the true impact that HYT and ISSB is making to these schools. It was highly rewarding to see the impressive buildings, knowing that HYT was behind the planning and construction of them. However, what we find the most rewarding is witnessing the happiness and excitement that HYT is creating amongst pupils and teachers alike.
