Mr Johnny and HYT - The Next Step

Continuing from 'Here's Johnny' - Here is a little more of Johnny!

HYT continues to make a big difference to Johnny’s life now, and he told us that his best memory was collecting enough money from working for HYT that he was able to buy his own plot in his village so he could live in his own home, where he now lives with his wife and 3 kids. Johnny told us that not only does it improve the lives of those working for the charity, but the impact on the school’s themselves is excellent. His brother attends 3R’s, the school at which Johnny trained, and he has noticed that now there is water, people no longer have to fetch water, and so the dropout levels are decreasing as the children are spending more of the school hours actually learning. The same is also true of the kitchen, which can now produce more food in a shorter amount of time, so during lunch hours they are eating, and work hours they are working, and there is no time wasted waiting for food.

Johnny discusses plans for the week with Wyndham and Philip

Johnny’s relationship with the management team is excellent; in fact all the guys at the top describe it as a family. If Johnny says he feels ill, then the guys would rush to look after him rather than get him into work, which is very different to other’s experiences working in this industry in Uganda. He told us he enjoyed the role with HYT so much as he likes working with others who are also keen to learn and people who want to learn real lessons that they can use to improve their lives.

Moving forward, Johnny can see HYT expanding all over Uganda, and said that he wanted HYT to move deeper into ‘the bush’, to the most rural areas of Uganda, to build more secondary schools and therefore increase the number of children attending school deeper in the countryside. He also mentioned that HYT can improve the educating part of their setup, and that HYT should aim to start going to teach in vocational schools, and also work on the government, in an attempt to get them to start favouring ISSB.
