Return to Makoka

A year after my first visit to Makoka with a party from Kipling House, it was wonderful to see a school transformed. As part of HYT's One Village at a Time project, Makoka Primary School has benefited from a comprehensive programme of training, construction and renovation. Deep in the bush of Kamuli District, Makoka's facilities had been poor, with desperately inadequate water and sanitation provision, crumbling classrooms and little more than a shack for a kitchen. The school now gleams, as do its children and teachers.

The Completed Accommodation Block

The school has new staff housing, meaning teachers no longer walk long distances to work. Water and sanitation is vastly improved, with the installation of rainwater harvesting tanks and pit latrines. The kitchen and classrooms have been renovated beyond recognition. And all this work was completed by Ugandans drawn from Makoka, equipped with construction skills by HYT. It is a wonderful example of Ugandans being given the opportunity to help themselves.
