Nearly two years after its conception, the partnership
project between HYT and the Rotary Clubs of Marlow, Bucks., la Celle St Cloud
Bougival, France and Jinja has come to fruition. While there remain three
structures to finish, no fewer than twenty seven water and sanitation
facilities have been completed and installed. These include rainwater
harvesting tanks, pit latrines and washrooms in five schools in Kamuli
District.
Rotarians and School Children open the new Structures
Kamuli district, in Central Eastern Uganda, has a high
infant mortality rate and particularly poor sanitation in its schools, where
the student to latrine stance can be as high as 1:100. Children often spend
many hours collecting water from a distant bore hole, even if there is one, so
water tanks on site, provide a welcome supplementary water source. It is hoped
this project will dramatically improve health and hygiene among hundreds of
children and in turn, improve their educational achievement.

As well as supplying schools with much needed water and
sanitation facilities, this Rotary and HYT partnership saw 22 Kamuli men
trained in HYT's low cost, carbon-saving construction technology, which will in
turn give these young Ugandans opportunities for a better working life to come.
