v
....A TEACHER
Following on in our series following a day in the life of those living and working in our fourth one village project, is a day in the life of Semyonjo Paul,

Having walked from the nearby village,
the Paul arrives between 8 and 8:30am, however if it is wet it can be
difficult for the teachers to get transport into the school meaning lessons
start late or on some days not at all. Due to a shortage of teaching staff in the
area, teachers are responsible for large classes of approximately 50 pupils sometimes even more! So the
job requires authority and discipline, The staff are required to teach a range
of subjects such as English, Science and Maths on a daily basis with all lessons being led in English, with Luganda, the local language being banned during school time. on some days the same teachers such as Paul will also take their class for sports in the afternoon. A thirty minute lunch break for posho and beans at 1pm, gives a small rest before returning to their
class to continue teaching. with School ending for P1 and P2 at 1 these teachers have this time to do marking and planning for the next day however for Paul who teaches P3 untill 4pm his time after school is used for this only then does he begin his walk back to his house in Makoka village, a short 15 minute or so walk, on the other hand some of the other teachers walk over an hour to be in school to teach.
