A Day in the Life of

v  ....AN HYT TRAINEE

Walabira Johnson - HYT Trainee at Makoka

Most of the HYT trainees live in the village of Makoka so walk to work across the fields in the morning for an 8:20am start this commute varies between a 5 and 15 minute walk depending upon the weather . They work until breakfast at around 10:30am, where they have porridge and pan bread, (a dry banana bread). depending upon where we are in the project workers complete a variety of tasks during the day; currently they are split into two groups, one group is digging the foundations for the new teachers dorm block whilst the other group makes bricks – around 300 per day. A lunch of Posho and beans is served at 1pm  and thanks to the renovated Kitchen the meals tend to come on time! After lunch the trainees continue rotating between the various jobs until the end of the day at 4pm. In the evenings some of  the trainees return to the village and do odd jobs in order to earn more money whilst others entertain themselves by playing and watching football, Johnson who is the assistant captain on site, and speaks for them when there are concerns on site, is one of the trainees who loves to watch and play football, but at the same time is a diligent and hard worker who pushes the others do do their best as well.
