Initial Impressions - By Josh & Pippa

Hi !

We are Josh & Pippa, Haileybury Youth Trusts new volunteers for 2013. Having arrived last week, we have had a chance to experience a snippet of the Ugandan lifestyle. The main difference we found to life in England is the relaxed lifestyle which is very noticable coming from a busy London background.
However living in the 30 degree heat is a respite from the cold snowy conditions back home in England.!

Only having been here for a few days, we have had the opportunity to see lots of sights and projects HYT has been working on or completed.Yesterday we went into the village of Makoka where HYT is in the process of constructing new buildings for a primary school in the village. Having been there for a few minutes we were encouraged to attempt a few of the infamous ISSB bricks that HYT specializes in. It is safe to say, the workers make it look much easier than it is!

Regarding the "The One Village At A Time Project" the team have already completed a kitchen and accommodation block, which has been named the Kipling-Batten block as these houses raised the money for this and in continuation to the 1V4 project, HYT intend to undergo building another accomodation block and classroom renovation which we are looking forward to being a part of and informing you on further progress during our time here. Also, on behalf of the Rotary club International, HYT is due to construct a latrine, watertank and washroom at the same school as well as 5 other beneficiary schools in the local area.

On the way back to Jinja from the village we paid a visit to Mutai Secondary School, a project HYT completed 6 months ago for the Bijagali Trust. It was incredible to see the difference HYT has made, as the children of the school can now learn without the overhanging danger of rubble and dust. The kitchen is now kitted out to feed hundreds for less money and time and the school is very much looking forward to starting their first new academic year with these buildings.

We are very much looking forward to our 6 months out here and hope to contribute as much as possible to the changes HYT is making in the area.
