Initial Impressions

Hi I am Neil, the most recent volunteer to go out with HYT Uganda. I found out about the charity though some friends who went to Haileybury, who knew I was interested in doing some volunteering work after finishing University. After speaking with Russell Matcham and Wyndham the country manager, they kindly agreed let me volunteer for a couple of months.

I have been in Jinja for 2 weeks now settling into the work with HYT and the Jinja lifestyle. The Jinja has a very unique relaxed atmosphere where nothing happens at a great pace whether it’s trying to make a deposit in a bank or just getting a burger from one of the local restaurants.

In my 2 weeks here, I have managed to visit a large number of the villages where HYT has either had input in, presently working in or are looking to begin work in. This has provided me with an insight into the work that HYT do and the impact that it has on the local communities. One of my first stops was in Namaganda the most recently completed 1village project. We arrived at lunch time which giving us the perfect opportunity to see the new kitchen in action serving up a hot lunch to over 800 pupils.

We also visited Mutai to check how things were progressing. It was an extremely enjoyable to see a recently finished project that was bringing obvious joy to all. Not only that but the headmaster informed us that the Vice President of Uganda had made an unannounced visit last week as he had seen the new buildings and was extremely impressed with the work that HYT had done for the school.
The 1 village project is Makako is progressing well as the trainee builders now have greater knowledge and skill in ISSB technology so building can take place at a quicker rate. This ongoing project will coincide with a number of new ventures which are due to start shortly making it a very exciting time to be part of the HYT team. I am very much looking forward to getting to grips with these new projects as the weeks progress.
