Exactly 6 months to the day since HYT started a project for
the Bujugali Trust at Mutai secondary school, the final coats of paint have
been applied and the school now has five new structures.
The project provided employment opportunities for over 30 of
HYT’s graduates and site helpers.
Mutai Secondary School located around 45 minutes outside of
Jinja has been able to benefit from the generosity of the Bujugali trust, as
well as the expertise of masons previously trained on other HYT projects in the
country.
The completion of a new four-classroom and administration block,
a science laboratory, exam hall, 20,000-litre water tank and a low carbon
kitchen, these new structures will enable the school to benefit in many ways.
For example the new kitchen will enable the school to reduce their firewood consumption by around 60% whilst still
being able to prepare food in large quantities and on a good time scale.
Similarly the school will benefit from having a purpose
built exam hall because it will enable them to widen their curriculum and sit
external exams at the school, an issue that had previously led to the loss of
pupils in the senior years, and the hall can also act as a source of income as
pupils from other schools without exam halls will be allowed to sit their exams
in mutai’s hall.
The new classroom block is replacing an old burned brick
building that had become incredibly unsafe to operate in, the new construction
offers a clean, cool and structurally sound teaching place, as well as three
classrooms the block also includes an office for the headmaster.
The opening ceremony on the 30th
July was a well attended event that showed the school's renewed determination to attract more pupils from the surrounding area as well as outline their future development plans.
HYT has been able to learn a lot from this project and we look forward to working on many other projects with the Bujagali trust in the future.
